I love guitar. It brings me endless joy, and so does helping people discover their passion for the instrument. I've been playing for over 15 years and have taught every age range and skill level.
As a former high school teacher, I understand that everyone learns differently. I will work with you to meet you where you're at, find your style, perfect your technique, and give you the tools you need to grow.
I can teach anything related to guitar and musicianship, including:
Guitar technique
Fretboard navigation
Music theory
Ear training
Improvisation
Songwriting and composition
Recording/producing
Tone crafting
Guitar repair and maintenance
I love music of all genres and will teach any style, whether you're a country crooner or a rabid death metal fan.
In-person (within 20 minute travel of Foster City, CA) - $30 per 30 minutes. Contact for quote if outside this range.
Online - $25 per 30 minutes
I teach all age ranges. However, if the student is a child, it's important to me that they are choosing to learn the instrument.
Absolutely! I offer lessons in person at the student's home or through Google Meet. If the student lives more than 20 minutes away from Foster City, we can discuss travel fees.
The student must have their own guitar on which they can practice. If the student wants to play electric guitar, I highly recommend a small practice amp in addition to the guitar. I am happy to offer personalized recommendations for guitars and equipment at every price point.
While guitar is my primary instrument, I am happy to teach bass. Contrary to what you might hear, it is not just a bigger guitar; I will teach you the different musical role it fulfills as well as how the technique differs from guitar.

Hello! My name is Monroe. I have been playing guitar for over 15 years. I play all around the Bay Area with bands of all different styles, though progressive rock/metal is what tends to come out of my fingers if you hand me a guitar and tell me to play. I taught high school for three years before changing careers, but I still love teaching and helping people on their learning journeys.
When I'm not playing guitar, I'm often hanging out with my wife and cat, tinkering with electronics, or going on a walk.
Check out some examples of my playing in the following videos
